Project Description, Terms of Participation

The Music Part of the blog has been launched in Oct. 2018. Initially, Billboard Hot 100 (up to 1969) files were posted. Then, other charts, other thematic sections have been added. List of all sections (subsections), with links, can be found in “Content” post.

In the first 1.5 years, t

passes* are visible to Active Followers only
Creation of the Let The Good Times Roll Club, the Society that shares the same passion, was my goal. My reflections after five years can be found here

You may apply to the Club, by supporting the blog

You can  contact me via Contact Form (preferred) or Facebook,
"what is the pass" request will be unanswered!

* sheet with passes consists not only the library of passes but, first of all, the register of all already posted files, documentation of all updates.

Google Drive cloud is used: 1. not banned worldwide, 2. updates are uploaded automatically, 3. no pop-ups, 4. no Time2Delete – no need for re-ups,
all links are active as long as I'm paying for the Google cloud.

Sound quality is essential = no mic rips(1)  , no poor YouTube

(1)  Sharing music recorded by a camera mic (mobile or other) is murdering of the music.

Every single track is remastered (2), iZotope RX7 licenced software and Audacity freeware are applied. All files are properly tagged.

Hi Professor,

On part 66.26, you have the UK flip side of Dusty's "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me." I'm sure you know, but the US flip was "Little By Little." Thanks again for everything!

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude or argumentative, but what I'm saying is that "Every Ounce Of Strength" was NOT the US b-side. "Little By Little" was the US B-side. "Every Ounce Of Strength" was never released in the USA, on single or album. In fact, I have 18 Dusty Springfield CD's, and as far as I can tell, it was never even released on CD in the US,at least not on the cd's I have. I only have it on the UK Singles A's and B's Collection. Whitburn and Discogs.com confirm this. But, it's your project, so I won't say any more. Sorry, and thanks for all you've done!

Many, many thanks BR. The wish-list has been reduced by six tracks which is absolutely priceless to me. Ramsey's tracks will remain on this list: "All My Love..." Single Edit 3:02 and "Hi Heel Sneakers Pt. 2" Cadet recording 2:47. Also, Shacklefords "California Sunshine Girl - Instrumental", not vocal. I have exactly the same copy of Jive Five and it is cut/faded at 2:17 while the label time is 2:30?

Hello Professor,
Here is my first upload to zippyshare. It is California Sunshine Girl b-side, instrumental version. Ripped from my vinyl. https://www32.zippyshare.com/v/KQxAJVI6/file.html

Please give me feedback as I have a few more songs from your want list, but it will take me some time to dig them out.

Also, I am wondering what your plans are for presenting the music of the 1950's. Do you plan to include the R&B charted songs and/or the Country charted tunes? Pop charts only would be pretty boring.

Thanks for the great job on the 60's charts.

tsi&hrjs

Professor RnR said...

1. Many thanks for California Sunshine Girl - instrumental. The quality is perfect, mint condition. Please continue.
2. Yes, I plan to continue with Billboard charts, after completing 1969. At first the 1950's, which are extremely interesting, for me even more than last years of the 1960's. Then, R&B, Adult Contemporary and Country. Then, the 1940's. Still plenty of fantastic music to be compiled.

tsi&hrjs said...

Glad you liked my contribution. I will try to find some more.

Hello Professor,

I am now working on your want list and I've found a couple possible discrepancies. Here one that I found from your want list that appears to already be in your completed file for 1963 Pt 52. It is "this was my love" by Sammy Davis Jr. Maybe you used a different version for a filler. Let me know if you really need that one.

I noticed two others that I do not have, The Ardells, - "lonely valley" and Jan Burgens - "shine".

I am about of quarter of the way through your list and I have found four items, so I am hoping to have a nice load to dump on you soon.

tsi&hrjs

Professor RnR said...

I leave a track on the wish-list if I'm not happy with the copy that I have included. I remember that Davis and Burgens tracks are edited (faded out) from the LP versions and I'm not sure whether they are Single Edits. Ardells seems to be OK, good quality and time matching the label one and I will delete this track from the wish-list.

philo said...

Curious as to where you found that version of "Oh, Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. It sounds updated. 1969 pt 20

Professor RnR said...

I have this song on at least 10 sources, 3 different edits. The one that I have included exactly matches the label time 4:59 but probably it is Spanish edit on Buddah, majority are Pavilion edited at 5:09 and probably they are US Edits regardles time discrepancy, the third is significantly faded out, probably UK edit. I have decided to include all three on updated 1969.20.

Thnx Professor for your incredible nice work.
Is it possible that the update from volume 68 part 32 is the same as vol 68 part 31.

And when tryin' to DL part 32 it gives me part31!!!
Thanks anyway for your great collection. ?

My set-up is a Gemini direct drive professional turntable run through a DAK pre-amp to DAK Audio Workshop for editing and tagging. There was only one single (Girl by The Magistrates that was in really bad shape and need a lot of noise removal). I save the files as mono 160 kbps mp3s.

Do you have suggestions for a better approach? I am used to the sound, so they sound pretty good to me, but let me know what you think.

tsi&hrjs

Professor RnR said...

DAK Audio Workshop sounds fine but the effect of your rips could be evidently better (wider bandwidth, selectivity of sounds). I have already received few tracks that you’ve sent, from other Oldies-fan, and they sound much better – please check Ray Peterson (64.63) or Simon Sisters (64.21) to see the difference. I don’t know what workshop has been used, may ask if you wish. Please forgive me my remarks. Your help is priceless. Simply, I want you to know that the effect of your rips could be better, perhaps even using DAK.

tsi&hrjs said...

Thank you for your feedback. I will first check my cartridge and stylus. I got the turntable used from my uncle who was an electrical engineer and DJ, but I don't know how long it had been since those were replaced. tsi&hrjs

Hi Professor,

Thanks for all your hard work on these confusing earlier 50's charts. I just had a few observations which aren't serious enough to warrant changing anything, but I thought you might like to be made aware anyway. On the Davis Sisters' "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," 15 August was actually the date it entered the Country charts; it didn't enter the Pop Jukebox chart until 10 October 1953. On Georgia Gibbs' "Somebody Bad Stole De Wedding Bell," you have it listed as entering the chart on 20 March 1954. This is actually an error in the Whitburn book. It DID enter the chart on 20 March, but that was a re-entry. It was then in it's third week on the chart. It originally entered the DeeJay chart on 20 February 1954, then fell off and re-entered on 20 March. Also, I think you inadvertently omitted Molly Bee's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" from the first part in 1955. It charted for one week on 03 January 1955. If you don't have that, both it and it's flip are available on Youtube.
I hope you find this information beneficial. Thanks again!

I just noticd the Burl Ives - A Holly Jolly Christmas you have in 1964 part 65 is not correct. It is the rerecorded version from 1965, the 1964 version is shorter and faster without the guitar in the intro

Hello ProfessorRnR,
I started to collect my favorite songs I had on tape in the late 50s and early 60s from your
Billboard collection. With some I had the desire to listen to them directly during this work.
So it happens with - (My Life) Without You - from Johnny Tillotson in 1961 nr 472a.
Oh, What's that ? It's not the song I heard in 61 and on my storage.
I took the original from my Disk. I've made a zip on mega with the CD JT EP-Collection 30 Tracks.
The link is
https://mega.nz/#!yfpFgCZQ!UGPFqCEjNi_b6sJHxKKeyMXQAb4-cARqScQ5OYL-FeA

Thank You for your really big work to the 40s back.

Rolf

Professor RnR said...

Tillotson recorded Without You twice. First, for Cadence, in 1961. Then, for MGM, in 1967. I have checked the version included in Part 1961/32 and this is the correct (Cadence) version, same as the one included in EP Collection. I have decided to update Part 61/32 such that now both versions are included. Thank you very much for your interest in my project. Repairing 1940s is a burden but the effect is really stunning, probably my copies (de-clicked and de-noised) are better than copies available on officially issued CDs.

Mike said...

Really enjoying your collection - thanks for sharing.
Not a complaint, but would like to inform you that metadata (titles, art, etc) are not complete in 1945, part 45-14. There are a few tracks without info and not all have your album cover.
Thanks again,

Thank you for the great work and for sharing it. Only today I came to hearing 1959 Part 36 and I believe the correct flip for Little Anthony's Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop is incorrect and should be I'm Still In Love With You, instead of I'm Falling In Love With You, that I think it's a single he recorded in 1973 ou 74 for Avco, and charted in 1974. I writing you in hope to be helpful to this wonderful collection! Jorge from Brasil

Professor RnR said...

Many many thanks Jorge. Obviously you are right. I have taken the wrong B-side from "End Complete Singles" CD, I didn't check its correctness. I have the correct one on few other sources and now, both tracks are present in Part 59.36.

Just an amazing resource ... I'm filling up external drives as we speak. But here's one thing: I can't figure out what to call the main folder for stashing these discs in my genre hierarchy. Putting them under OLDIES is easy enough. But would it be strictly accurate to file all of these in a folder titled something like BILLBOARD CHARTS in all cases? Even for R&B? I've looked around here for a definition of what all this great material represents, chart-wise, but haven't found anything. Probably it's so obvious that I'm the only one who doesn't see it, but ... could you restate it? TIA...

Fantastic, the best Xmas gift. The sound quality of all three is perfect or very good. I do the remastering, using professional software, and export all files at 320, then, bitrate of the original material is meaningless - these tunes are 50++ years old. Btw, all three are pretty nice tunes.

Professor RnR said...

Oops again. Evidently a bad luck track. Now, it should be correct. I have boths songs in my resources and I have selected initially I would love you instead of I will love you, both by The Outsiders, one US group another Dutch group. Sorry.

Professor RnR said...

I didn't visit this site before. This site offers Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits - very subjective selection, and A-sides. There is another site/forum (Dusty's Old Gold Music) that offers all A-sides, some of them in poor quality, some are mistaken. Generally, I don't intend to compete with any blogger, we should rather help each other. I'm including also B-sides, some of them, if not majority, are real gems. I'm trying to select best copies, practically every track is remastered by iZotope RX7. From my experience, rips of 99% of tracks, CD, or YouTube, or... are messy (fade in/out and normalization as the minumum). Tagging is messy in 99.99%.

So you are turning this project into an elitist only venture? If someone doesn't offer to give you new songs, then they're not eligible to download your updates? You're just going to take your ball and go home? Hey, I appreciate all that you have done here, but extortion is never a good thing. I have improvements to offer, but when I am ready. I don't live at your blog. I go through each song for quality and accuracy, but it's not all that I do. I truly thought this to be a remarkable project, but your new business model is not the way to get what you want. It's your site, you are free to do as you wish, I'm not yet a contributor, but now I won't be.

You said: “your new business model is not the way to get what you want”. I have spent thousands of dollars on my collection, only in February I have spent 4000$ on vinyls. After three months of activity the total donation is 50 (fifty)$ and you call it a business? Shame on me Jerry? I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on my collection, and although I am not sharing this collection on my blog, I share many other things and out of an average of over 1000 downloads each, you may get 10-15 thank you's. I haven't made them only available to those who do. Very few people do. And those who do usually aren't around long. Everyone has the right to do as they wish. I acknowledged the great work that was put in, and I thought it was an awesome project. I am pretty sure that I have thanked you with an actual name, but this message came out as anonymous even though I had a name beside "Reply as". At this point, I guess that I will opt out, and no one will miss me. Not everyone comes to the first page on the first visit. Hopefully they won't download 42 parts only to find out they can't download part 43. Thanks for what I HAVE downloaded, I think it is an important entry for Whitburn collectors. I just hope there aren't more than 60 of them out there.

It will be very difficult to find even a single missing track from the last 100 (0.03%). Your work is to find wrong tracks - I'm sure that they still exist, also tracks with a poor quality. Thanks in advance.

Please note that I’m not sharing CD’s from my collection (some 30 000 CDs). Bloggers who share CDs compiled by others, together with an artwork, are simply violating IP and do not deserve thank you. Moreover, majority of them share CDs just to earn money from a file sharing cloud they are using. I’m using Google cloud and have to pay for that. I have spent thousands of hours remastering, ripping, arranging the compilations and I expect “thank you” for my work, to be sure that my work is not going in vain.

Hello ProfRnR,
I was looking in you open mp3 list and found Bill Boyd
Home Coming Waltz.
There was a release in 1941 and in 1947.
On Cattle and BACM was the date 1941. It's the Bluebird label.
I've a RCA mp3 downloaded with bad quality, but found, it's
the same original song.
On Wikipeda I read , that the Bluebird label is a
a lower-priced RCA Victor subsidiary label.

Wikipedia says
After World War II, the Bluebird label was retired and its previously
released titles were reissued on the standard RCA Victor label.
So I thinks its the same song.
Here I have the Infos and the songs.
BACM has the same speed as the RCA mp3. Compare it.
When you've other Informations, tell me.

Many many thanks Rolf. Yes, I know the story with Bluebird, RCA. Yes, BACM copy is the copy that we are looking for, good quality. Two other copies are also originals but poor quality. lemonflag, you and many others that send me words of support via Contact field or via Facebook are creators of this project - thank you all.

Many thanks for your kind words - see my reply to Rolf. I live in the hermitage, located in the forest where only beavers and squirrels are my neighbours. But today's situation is something from Sci-Fi movies. People are dying and I'm still enjoying Oldies passion. But in a hard times, if you can't help, you should at least improve your mood and others mood at the same time and that's what I'm doing. Mail is not working, delivery of ordered 45s will be delayed two months at least, but this don't really matters today. Take care.

Hi Prof,
Going through 1965 I noticed the Chad & Jeremy song "What Do You Want With Me" has strings on it. I believe that is a LP version and the original Ember UK / World Artists US singles did not have the strings. Cheers.

Professor RnR said...

I have both tracks. Probably you have an old spreadsheet. I'm updating it constantly, so please check/download the updated version - click link "missing", in green. Thank you for your comment, each comment is very valuable for me.

Professor RnR said...

Hi Mike, ??? I have two versions of this song, one is LP Version and the other one is Alternate Version, and both have strings. The Best Of and other compilations that I have, have LP Version. I have found other, nice compilation: rpm, complete Ember/WA and the Single Version is there. Ordered, in Polish shop, should arrive in few days. Thank you and hats off, this error, if error, was very very difficult to detect.

Mike Britcom said...

I was trying to sort it out myself. I found a video of the World Artists single on youtube and it was the "no strings" version. Actually it has strings but they are almost buried in the mix. Personally, I don't much care but I know you strive to get the actual recordings that appeared on the single releases.

Professor RnR said...

Yes Mike, I strive to get the actual recordings. It is the sense of this project. Complete Ember/WA 2CD that I've ordered appeared to be sold out. Fortunately, I managed to get mp3 copy of this set, with mono versions of all singles. For "What Do You Want With Me", the difference is difficult to distinguish but there is. Again Mike, many thanks and hats off.

Thanks for your great job!

A67.27A Anita Kerr Singers - One In A Row
https://www24.zippyshare.com/v/ks3p06W2/file.html
It's the promo edition on Warner Bros. #7010 from '67 but I think this will do cause checking the B-Side of that promo 'The Ever Constant Sea' gives totally the same song as on your file.
Thanks again for al the good work

BaDmutti said...

Also wanna say that your posting "A67.27C Anita Kerr - The Ever Constant Sea" is the Anita Kerr Singers , and not the San Sebastian Strings as noticed in the Tags.
The Anita Kerr version takes about 2'40"(with vocals) and the San Sebastian Strings only 2 minutes and no vocals. (San Sebastian Strings are a studio orchestra in collaboration with Anita Kerr and Rod McKuen from the 1960s)
I hereby give the link for the San Sebastian Strings-version from the 1990 US reissue on Warner Bros. Records ‎– 1670-2

I got a slightly better version without cracklin' on 128kb which I put in the zip-file too. There are two different releases on Dore #749 (both '66 US) One as "The Entertainers IIII" and the other as "The Entertainers IV" Both scans also in the zip-file.

https://www29.zippyshare.com/v/a7mDyiS3/file.html

This is the version coming from the LP "Strictly Sentimental" (Decca 3DL 4581 - '65)

Grts and keep up the good work!!

Professor RnR said...

Sorry for my late reply. Blogger blocks all comments above 200 and I had to delete some to see your comments. I have original Anita Kerr 45. Side-A is the same as that you've sent. Side-B is different from that previously added - same time but different content, please check.

Professor RnR said...

The version from Rare Singles is my rip from original 45 and I can't hear any crackling??? I have compared both copies and in my subjective opinion rip from original 45, remastered by iZotope RX7 sounds better.

Professor RnR said...

One big thank you is not enough. You've reduced my wishlist by two extremely rare Prysock's songs. Both fantastic quality, i.e. clean sound, bit rate is meaningless. I've been looking for Anita Kerr 45 last few years. Finally, I found it in Internet and purchased and you've sent me this track at the same time. Nevertheless, B-side from my 45 is different than that previously posted, erronously tagged. Did you check quality of my rip of Entertainers IV, posted on Rare Singles or that posted under RB - I didn't replace it yet. I also love Belgian Popcorn. Thanks and please continue helping me in reducing the wishlist.

Professor RnR said...

I have changed the setting and now can see comments 200+, don't have to delete previous - they are very precious to me.

Professor RnR said...

Both Prysock's are taken from LPs. 1951 seems to be the same as 45, 1961 is from 1966 LP unfortunately remastered in stereo but also seems to be the original 1961 recording.

I use Twilight Zone a lot for downloads. On August 8 I saw that Billboard 1956 Part 56.25 was revised & upgraded and showed the password for it, however once it was downloaded it didn't need the password to extract. Hello Professor R&R
I've really a problem with the original -Sail along silv'ry moon-
from 1957
I had it on my old tape and didn't know where I've taped it.
But to say this, I love this version and thought always, it's the
original hit.
There were a lot of CDs on the market and in only one so far
I found this version again on
--The Best of Billy Vaughn-- 50 Original Hits on 2 CD
This CD is also on discog with some explaination at the end, that
says these are all Billboard Hot 100 chart entries including ------

There are other CDs where the Compilator says, they are all
original hits.
Listen to that song that I always listen to. I love it. But it's my taste.

Maybe you have some more info than me.

Hello Prof,

I did leave this message for you on Twilight Zone yesterday, but I'm not sure if you read them there, so please excuse me repeating it here:

Thanks as always for another instalment of your mammoth compilation of the Billboard charts. I'm afraid there's something wrong with today's file for part 57.26 which does not respond to the password. I tried re-downloading it direct from your blog site, but that has the same file affected with the same problem. Perhaps you could kindly look into this and repost?

Incidentally, if you are still looking for a missing flipside of a 1962 Virtues single Guitar Boogie Shuffle Twist/Guitar Boogie Stomp, I do have that disc but no way of digitizing it (no working turntable). I would gladly post the single to you by way of thanks for all your work and expense but I'd need to contact you privately for your postal address and could find no way of doing that when I looked at the time when you asked about it. Let me know if you still need it.

Dear Professor RnR,

A huge thank to you for all your work here and on the twilightzone. This time I was listining to the year 1967 and found an error in part 24. The track "Love Song" by The Artistics is actually an album stereo version and the duration of the original single version is 2:52. Also the b side "I'll Always Love You" is a stereo version which is normally mono on single. I hope you have the right versions, if not, maybe I can help you just let me know.

Best wishes to you.

Professor RnR said...

Dear @TheSingleGuy45
Yes, both tracks are Album (S). Some 10% of tracks are Single Versions, different from Album (S). I’m trying to detect such Single Versions and add to the existing, already posted files, during the remastering process. This process is in progress. Today I have remastered Part 1966.57. I will start remastering 1967 soon and I will add The Artistics 45 versions then. Sometimes, I leave the stereo versions. In such a case, I check whether this is the 45 version, on CD booklet, on Internet. If I’m not certain, to be 100% sure that the version that I have is really the 45 version, I have to purchase the original vinyl. Today, I have ordered The Righteous Brothers - On This Side Of Goodbye / A Man Without A Dream. I have many versions of these songs, with different times, other than the label times?!
Thank you very much for your interest in the project and don’t hesitate to drop a line from time to time. The blog visitor’s feedback is essential to me.

TheSingleGuy45 said...

Dear Professor RnR,

Got a question. I See several tracks have a(S) out beside them. Are these the original 45's or other single versions. Just curious. This is a great project you are doing. Keep up the good work

(S) means Stereo, from original 45, if released in Stereo or Album track having the same edit as the original Mono - more info on the spreadsheet with links (bottom lines).

Files are constantly updated (45 rips replace poor quality or Album tracks) and passes are also updated. Then, some passes from TZ comments are not actual. Please contact me, to get the new pass to 68.04.

Hi Professor, as a owner of the "Hit Bilanz - Deutsche Chart Singles" Books, I'm very interested in completing all tracks by listening to many obscure titles. Some of those tracks are missing in my collection. Therefore it's great that you offer all these tracks for downloading.
Last but not least thanks for your reply to my yesterday's email.
Greetings bigdee

Can you do extend the Billboard "Hot 100 and BU" charts through the seventies and eighties.

1979 yes, soon to come. I do not plan 1980s. Greatest Hits of the 1980s are commonly available (YouTube, CD). Then, perhaps, only uncharted rarities.

I've collected a good share of 60s/70s Soul and I have to say that the 1969 Billboard R&B set is one of the greatest collections I've ever heard. It's amazing how these random records connected only by a chart can contain so many fantastic, little-heard songs. The rest of them are great but, for some reason, these 1969 songs stand out more than the others. Thanks for putting so much work into making this music available.

Many thanks. Yes, there are many gems in hits that Bubbled Under, entered other charts or did not enter any chart. Discovering such gems gives lots of pleasure and satisfaction.
