Obscure American Artists 1956-1963, Teen 202

 


Carl Burrell. Reggae singer - one single for Arrawak Records (label from Bronx, New York), both songs composed by Carlton Burrell.

The Candy Stripes. Rock and Pop singer - one single for VIM (Variety in Music. US label distributed by Clock Record Distributors Inc. Broadway, NYC).

Kenny Carlton. Rock and Doo Wop singer - one single for Valli Records (label from South Bend, Indiana).

Wayne Chance. Teen Pop and Doo Wop singer, one single for Whirlybird Records (label from Hollywood, California) - Chance composed both songs.

The Chantiers. Doo Wop group - one single for DJB (label from Geuda Springs, Kansas).

Diane Castle. Born Diane King, Pop and Soul vocalist. In 1964 she recorded two singles (Decca, MGM). Also went by Ginny Satin, with one release on Philips in 1965.

 

Carmen Carroll. Jazz-Pop vocalist from San Bernardino, CA. One single for Sand (label from Hollywood, CA).











Larry Chance. Born Larry Figueiredo, 1940 in The Bronx, NY - died 2023. He was a singer and bandleader who helped keep doo-wop music alive for decades. His career began in 1957, when he and some friends from the Bronx formed the vocal group that would become The Earls. Chance later had a brief solo career, recording one single for Barry Records (label from New York City).

Obscure American Artists 1956-1963, Teen 201

Neil Brandt & The Destinies. Obscure Teen Sound singer - one single for Etc... Records (label from Broadway, New York City. 

Carolyn Brent. Teen Sound singer - one single for Congress Records (label from NYC, launched in 1962 by Neil Galligan and Hutch Davie).

Bruce & The Charms. Teen Rock artists - one single for Robin Records (label from Cortland, New York).

Donnie Bryan & The Raging Storms. Bar band from Toledo, Ohio in the 1960s. Long time contract at the Peppermint Club in Toledo. Splintered from The Storms, one of the original rock 'n' roll bands in Toledo in the 1950s. In 1964they recorded three singles (one listed by Kreiter) for Keldon Records (local label from Toledo). Earlier, The Raging Storms recorded three instrumental singles for other labels (see Q71).

Billy Budd. Teen Pop singer - one single for 20th Century-Fox.


Terry Boyd & The Trends. Artie Wayne produced, co-wrote and sang the only single under the name Terry Boyd, in 1964. Arranged by Trade Martin.

Arthur Wayne Kent (1942 - 2019) was record producer, music publisher, songwriter and singer.

Dale Brooks. Teen Sound singer, in 1964 signed by the Al Kasha-Milton Stein label, Dolphin Records (from NYC), recorded one single. Three more singles in 1966.




The Barry Sisters. Claire Barry (née Clara Bagelman, 1920 -  2014) and Merna Barry (née Minnie Bagelman, 1923 - 1976) were Jewish sisters from the Bronx, New York. Their career as Yiddish jazz singers stretched from the late 1930s until the early 1970s. Signed to RCA in the 1930s as The Bagelman Sisters, they changed their stage name to The Barry Sisters for radio. They recorded numerous 78s and 45s as well as 11 LPs by 1973. In 1958/1959 four singles for Roulette, in 1963/1964 two singles for Colpix (listed by Kreiter).


The Bracelets. Soul/R&B girl group from Chicago, IL. Actually named The Starlets, they recorded a new version of "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" (originally by The Basin Street Boys from 1946) in 1961 but the song was released under another group's name: The Blue Belles.

Adonis. Teen Pop singer - one single for Powertree Records, Inc. (label from New York City).

Gary Arthur. Gary Arthur Oberg, Teen Sound singer from Crystal Lake, Illinois - one single for Debby Records (label from Chicago, Illinois).

Tommy Autry. Teen Pop singer from Odessa, Texas - one single for Token Records (label from Midland, Texas). He was a member of Mike Malone & The Misters (Tb08).

Becky Lee Beck. Girl singer from Columbus, GA. One single for Challenge, both songs composed by John Suhr (rockabilly artist from Atlanta).

Bill Berry. Rockabilly singer - one single for GMA (label from Chicago, Illinois).

Becky & The Montclairs. Rock and Soul group - one single for Accent (California based label).

Joyce Bennett. Soul singer - one single released by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania labels (Fran-Ette / Jaguar).


The Beachcombers. Surf-rock group that included:

Alfred Anthony Affrunti (also known as Alzo Fronte), and an unknown person named Car - one single for Diamond Records (label from New York City).

Frank had a successful solo career prior to this recording. Several other groups used this name.

 




The Allen Sisters. Canadian sister singing duo, The Allan Sisters, originally from Edmonton, Alberta, moved to Toronto.
Their first single, credited to The Allen Sisters, was recorded in the US, released by Shell Records (label from New York City) - both songs composed by Hoffman-Klein (prolific US songwriters).





Annie & The Orphans. Group from California. Members:

Obscure American Artists 1956-1963, Teen 199




Alan Roberts. Several artists active 1956-1965 used this name. Two singles, presumably by different artist, are classified by Kreiter as Teen Sound. 

Bob Thomas. Teen Pop vocalist - one single for Abel Records (label, associated with Laurie Records - label from NYC).

P.F. Sloan. Born Philip Gary Schlein in New York City in 1945, to a Jewish-American father and a Romanian-born mother. His family moved to West Hollywood, California in 1957, where his father, a pharmacist, changed the family name from Schlein to Sloan after repeatedly being denied a liquor license for his store. When Sloan was 13 his father bought him a guitar. In 1959, at 14, "Flip" Sloan recorded the first single, for the L.A. R&B record label Aladdin Records, which folded soon after its release. In 1960 he recorded the second single, released by Mart Records (label from Beverly Hills, California) and credited to Phil Sloan.
During the mid-1960s, he wrote, performed, and produced many Billboard Top 20 hits.  He died in 2015 at his home in Los Angeles, from pancreatic cancer.

Billy Dawn Smith. Born William Paul Smith in 1931, Brooklyn, New York; died 2018. In the early 1950s, he put together a vocal group known as The Billy Dawn Quartet that consisted of himself, his brother Tom, and two friends. Between 1956 and 1962 Billy Dawn Smith recorded several singles, as Billy Dawn. He did not meet with much success as a recording artist but was more successful as a songwriter and arranger.

Buddy Kalb aka Big Buddy K. Born Cyrus William Kalb, Jr. Singer, songwriter. In 1959 recorded one single for Scottie (label from Atlanta, Georgia), in 1963 one single for Vee Jay; both singles self-written.

The Lonely One. One single released by Rendezvous (label from Los Angeles, California), the B-side credited to The Lonely Ones.

The Loneley One. A-side of a single released by Carol Music Co. (label and publisher from New York City), the B-side instrumental is credited to The Unashables.



Dennis Bell. Teen pop singer. Born as Dennis Ballabio in 1943, in Union City, NJ - died 1978.

At 11, he cut two records with Mitch Miller.

He appeared twice on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand.

Joe Ravel. Teen Pop and Doo-Wop singer from Little Italy in the Bronx. 

Eddie Moore. Rockabilly singer and songwriter. Several other artists used this name.

Kenneth Springs. R&B and Doo-Wop singer and songwriter - one single released by Columbia, both tracks written by K. Springs and Don Bradford (Doo-Wop vocalist).


The Honeycones. Pop group from the Philadelphia area. Tony Diarenzo (bass); Ernie Cast (drums); Bobby Federa (alto sax); Bobby Chic (piano); Joey Vail (guitar). The Honeycones were originally known as The Chicklets but due to copywrite problems the name was changed to The Honeycones, a name that Tony created. He also wrote a majority of the songs that they performed. They recorded four singles for Ember, the first credited as Ernie Cast & The Honeycones (see Ta70).

Rick Randell. Real name: Rocco Gaeta, he was born and raised in Newark, NJ. In Jr. High He started a band called The Rockers. This group lasted into High School where they would play for the HS dances. In 1959, as Rick & The Rockers they recorded the first single, for Arc Records. Same year they recorded the second single, as  Rick & The Randells, for ABC-Paramount.

In 1960, ABC Paramount dropped the group, kept Rick Randell (Rocco Gaeta was too ethnic) and he recorded for Apt Records, a subsidiary of ABC Paramount.
Rick Randell recorded for several other major labels: Decca, United Artists, Reprise.

Lee Estes. Teen Pop vocalist - one single for Hope Records Inc. (label from Nashville, Tennessee).

Frank Fleming. Teen Pop and Doo-Wop vocalist. Between 1961 and 1963 he released three singles, the first credited to Frankie & Don, the third as Frankie Fleming, Jr. Actually, these singles contain three songs. Both songs from the firs single have been speeded up and re-issued as flips of next two singles (the A-side of these singles is identical).

Wayne Hammond & The Starfirers. Rockabilly artist - one single for Gala Records (label from Vidalia, Georgia).

Joe Hammonds with The Blue Rays. Rockabilly artist - one single for Bee Records (label from Reading, Pennsylvania).

Dana Sisters. One single for Kedlen Records (label from Chicago, Illinois).

Dave Darragh. Rock singer and songwriter from Seattle, Washington - one single for a local label (Dara Records).

Frank Grieco. Teen Pop vocalist from Weirton WV / Steubenville OH area - one single for a local label FHG Records). 

Bobby Brown & The Curios. Rock 'n' Roll ' band from Arkansas, fronted bysinger Bobby Brown (right).






Don Estes. Pop vocalist. In the early 1950s he recorded several singles for RCA Victor, Dot and Decca, one more single in 1958 for Columbia, classified by Kreiter as Teen Sound.




The Del-Tones. Rock group formed by

Frankie Nestro.
Frankie was raised on Buffalo’s West Side. Born Frank Aguglia, he attended Grover Cleveland High School. He became interested in pop music of the day and formed a group called the Del-Tones. By the time they had attracted the interest of a man who wanted to get them into a studio. The first and only single, You’re The One / You’re My Love, was recorded and issued in 1960, by locally-based Count Records, a label credited to just The Del-Tones.
Frankie was  also a disc jockey and record distributor (see T41).

Barbara Chandler. Teen Pop singer from New York, NY. Her only hit (It Hurts To Be Sixteen) was penned by Neil Sedaka , under the name "Ronnie Grossman.




Dorinda Duncan. Pop vocalist from Florida, member of The Briarwood Singers.In 1960/61 she recorded two solo singles for Glendale Records (label from Orlando, Florida).










Jimmy Damon. Teen Sound singer - recorded two singles for small labels from Hollywood, California.

 


Bing Day. Born Charles Wayne Day in 1942, died 2008. Guitarist and baritone bluesman from South Side Chicago.
Between 1958 and 1960 he recorded four singles as Bing Day and one single as Ford Hopkins. Moreover, he added vocal to one track of Danny Bell & The Bell Hops single (see Q??).
 
He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1965 and began a career as one of the most listened to "unknown" artists in rock and roll. He became bassist with Johnny Rivers' Band. Day originated the riff in "Secret Agent Man".

Joanie Shields. Teen Pop singer - one single for Galahad Records (label from Norwalk, CA).


Tony Borders. Southern soul singer from Alabama. He was the most prolific of the artists that Muscle Shoals producer Quin Ivy recorded - apart of the great Percy Sledge.
