The Music Part of the blog has been launched in Oct. 2018. Initially, Billboard Hot 100 (up to 1969) files were posted. Then, other charts, other thematic sections have been added. List of all sections (subsections), with links, can be found in “Content” post.

Non-Billboard Cash Box, Music Vendor, (Gavin Report) 1954(58)-1969

On the week ending November 12, 1955, Billboard published The Top 100 for the first time. In 1959, Billboard Bubbling Under Chart has been launched. In parallel, two other charts existed on American music industry scene, Cash Box and Music Vendor.

Cash Box Top 50 between 1954 and 1956, Top 75 between 1956 and 1958, Top 100 from 1958.

Music Vendor Top 100 between 1954 and 1964, renamed Record World Top 100 in 1964.

The number of hits that entered these charts and didn’t appear on Billboard Charts (Pop, R&B, Country, AC), even as flips, was significant. Then, to have complete overview on American music industry scene from 1954 to 1969, also two "other" charts have to be taken into account*.

Remarks:
  • Hits that entered Billboard charts as flips, and/or entered charts other than Pop, are omitted.
  • The research of Whitburn’s Billboard Top Pop Singles begins with the issue dated January 1, 1955 and includes songs that first charted in 1954. The Comparison Book (primary reference) lists songs that charted from October 2, 1954, i.e. songs with at least one debut date that satisfies the boundary (other debut date(s) can be earlier).
  • Earlier 1954 non-Billboard (Whitburn’s Pop Hits) songs researched for Cash Box Pop Hits (secondary reference)  and yet not researched for the Comparison Book are also included in this project, as separate files.
  • Songs recorded by multiple artists were listed by Cash Box and Music Vendor together at one chart position.  As a rule, only "hit" secondary versions included in the Comparison Book are taken into account. However, for the 1960s the comparison is based on original CB charts and all secondary CB versions are included.

In majority, the singles are not available on CD or on the Internet, some two hundred 45s from my collection have been ripped and remastered.

Please share your comments, suggestions.

*The total number of hit singles that were not listed on Billboard Charts, as Hits or Flips: 1197
·         Cash Box 1950’s: 404 (310+94)
·         Cash Box 1960’s: 120
·         Music Vendor: 673

BREAKOUT / TERRITORIAL HITS 1955-1969

In the 13th edition of Top Pop Hits (1955-2010) Joel Whitburn introduced new, never-before-seen research of the songs and artists that hit only on Billboard's influential Territorial and Breakout charts.

Billboard  published the Territorial Top 10 Best Selling  charts, which were separate rankings of the Top 10 hits from 23 major cities, weekly from January 1, 1955 through October 13, 1958.
Billboard  introduced its Breakout Singles chart on January 9, 1961. The chart listed new records, not yet on Hot 100, but have been reported getting strong sales action by dealers in 34 major markets.

Both charts have been researched for hits which made these charts but did not make any of the other charts researched already, i.e. all Billboard, Cash Box, Music Vendor (Record World), Gavin Report. Hits that entered other charts as flips are also excluded. In other words, only singles that have not yet been researched (posted) are included.

Breakout
390 singles, 780 tracks (26 files)
around forty singles from the original 45's (from my record collection)
8 tracks missing, 1967-69 only,
denoted on the sheet  Breakout Hits tracks

HONOR ROLL OF HITS / COMING UP STRONG Charts

The Honor Roll Of Hits chart was a weekly ranking that included all versions of a popular song as one listing. The Coming Up Strong chart was a continuation of Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart. Whitburn researched The Honor Roll Of Hits chart and The Coming Up Strong chart only for records which made these charts but did not make any of the other Billboard pop charts. The 26 songs that hit Honor Roll Of Hits and Coming Up Strong charts exclusively have been shown in the main artist section of Top Pop Singles 1955-1996. They are not shown in next editions.

All 26 hits can be found in the already posted files (location in the last column of the sheet).

If the lost artist did not appear already and is not present on the spreadsheet of missing songs*, then it does not mean that I have forgotten this artist. It means that the discography is not complete and there are many such artists.
* Not every song/artist that is missing is included on the spreadsheet, which is overloaded already.
